Unila FMIPA Applied Biology Students Conduct Health Entomology Field Practicum in Pesawaran Regency
Pesawaran, 13 June 2026 – The Applied Biology Undergraduate Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) University of Lampung held a Health Entomology Field Practicum in Sukajaya Lempasing Village and Hanura Village, Pesawaran Regency, on Saturday (13/6).
This activity aims to provide students with direct learning experience in studying insects that act as disease vectors, in particular mosquitoes, as well as recognizing various larval breeding habitats in the environment. Field practicum is an important part of the learning process because it integrates theory obtained in class with practice and direct observation in the field.
The practicum was accompanied by Biology Lecturer at FMIPA Lampung University, Dr. Endah Setyaningrum, M.Biomed., who also serves as Head of the Zoology Laboratory, FMIPA, Lampung University. This activity also involved Health Entomologists and malaria cadres from the Hanura Community Health Center working area.
Before carrying out sampling, students received briefings on malaria, malaria indicators, as well as treatment and control strategies from Dodi Setiawan, S.K.M., M.M., as Malaria Prevention and Eradication Program Coordinator.
At the afternoon field session in Sukajaya Village Lempasing, students conducted a survey of potential mosquito breeding habitats and took samples of larvae in various water reservoirs and puddles that had the potential to become mosquito breeding locations. Activities continued at night in Hanura Village by catching adult mosquitoes using an aspirator to support the process of identifying disease vector species.
All samples that were collected were then taken to the Zoology Laboratory, FMIPA, Lampung University for further microscopic observation and identification. It is hoped that the results of these observations can increase students' understanding of the diversity of mosquitoes, the characteristics of their habitats, and their role in transmitting disease to humans.
Through this activity, students not only gain technical skills in taking and identifying samples, but also understand the important role of biological science in supporting efforts to prevent and control vector-based diseases. In addition, collaboration between universities, health workers and the community is expected to strengthen synergy in improving environmental health and public health.
Health Entomology Field Practicum is a form of implementation of experience-based learning (experiential learning) which is routinely carried out by the Applied Biology Undergraduate Study Program, FMIPA, University of Lampung to produce graduates who are competent, adaptive and ready to contribute to the field of environmental health and tropical disease control.
