Community Service Collaboration of Chemistry and Biology Department, FMIPA Unila: Strengthening Scientific Literacy, Reproductive Health, and Prevention of Violence in Schools for the Young Generation

The Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Lampung carried out community service activities (PKM) at Kebumen Islamic High School on Tuesday, May 12 2026. This activity is part of the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education which aims to increase scientific literacy, understanding of adolescent reproductive health, as well as students' awareness of the importance of creating a school environment that is safe, comfortable and free from violence.

The activity took place in the Kebumen Islamic High School hall and was attended by around 312 students from various grade levels. The event started at 10.00 WIB and was officially opened by the Head of Kebumen Islamic High School, Drs. Ahmad Damiri, M.Pd. In his speech, he expressed his appreciation and thanks to the FMIPA Universitas Lampung lecturer team for holding educational activities which were considered relevant to students' current needs. According to him, strengthening scientific insight, character education and adolescent health are important parts in forming a quality and competitive young generation.

This PKM activity is the result of collaboration between young lecturers from the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biology, FMIPA, Universitas Lampung. The implementation team present consisted of Dr. Widyastuti, M.Si., Rohimatul Anwar, M.Si., Annisa Ananda, M.Si., Indriyani, M.Si., Nidia Lidya Susanti, S.Pd., M.Sc., and Devi Eka Lestari, M.Si. This cross-disciplinary collaboration is a form of academic synergy in providing education that not only focuses on scientific aspects, but also on strengthening the character and health of teenagers.

The first material presented was an introduction to the Faculty of Mathematics, Science and Technology, Universitas Lampung. In this session, students were given insight into study programs in the FMIPA environment, career prospects for science graduates, opportunities for research and technology development, as well as the importance of mastering knowledge in the ever-growing digital era. The resource person also introduced various academic and non-academic activities for FMIPA students at the University of Lampung as a form of motivation for students to continue their education at the tertiary level.

Apart from introducing the world of lectures, this session also aims to foster students' interest in the fields of science and technology from an early age. The participants seemed enthusiastic when given an overview of career opportunities in the fields of chemistry, biology, pharmacy, environment, health, and research-based technology which is currently increasingly developing.

The second material discussed the Prevention and Handling of Violence in Educational Units (PPKSP). In this session, participants were given an understanding of the importance of creating a school environment that is safe, inclusive, and supports students' psychological development. The resource person explained the various forms of violence that can occur in the school environment, whether physical, verbal, psychological violence, or bullying, along with the negative impacts that can have on students' mental health and learning processes.

Participants were also given education regarding steps to prevent violence, the importance of healthy communication, as well as reporting mechanisms if acts of violence occur in the school environment. The material was delivered interactively by involving students in discussions and simple case studies so that participants could understand the material in a more contextual and applicable way.

The final session discussed adolescent reproductive health. This material is presented scientifically, communicatively, and adapted to the age of the students. The resource person explained the importance of maintaining reproductive health, understanding physical and psychological changes during adolescence, and developing healthy and responsible living behavior.

Apart from that, participants were also given an understanding of the importance of maintaining personal hygiene, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and the ability to make wise decisions in teenage relationships. This material received great attention from students because it is directly related to their daily lives and development as teenagers.

The activity took place in an interactive atmosphere and full of enthusiasm. The students actively participated in discussion and question and answer sessions on each material presented. The interaction between lecturers and participants shows the students' high interest in issues of education, health and self-development.

Through this community service activity, the Chemistry Department and Biology Department, FMIPA, Universitas Lampung hope to make a real contribution to increasing scientific literacy, adolescent health and character education for the younger generation. Apart from that, this activity is also expected to be able to strengthen the synergy between universities and schools in supporting the creation of a healthy, safe and quality educational environment.
